EmoQ: Connecting Emotions Through AR
Self Initiated
Emo Quest reimagines emotional journaling by integrating AR-powered interactions within specific communities. Instead of traditional mood tracking, users place and discover emotion characters in shared spaces, fostering connection and self-awareness.
How It Works:
- AR Emotion Mapping – Users interact with emotion markers placed within their community, creating a shared emotional landscape.
- AI-Tailored Quests – Based on users’ emotional states, AI suggests personalized quests that encourage self-reflection and community engagement.
- Private & Interactive Journaling – A space to track moods, recognize patterns, and find relatable emotional experiences around them.
- Customizable Expression – Users design their own emotion characters, making their experiences more personal and meaningful.
1. Research Phase: Understanding the Problem
The project began with in-depth research on emotional well-being and student mental health challenges. Through literature review and expert insights, I identified a common issue—students often struggle to articulate their emotions, leading to isolation and unaddressed mental health concerns.
To explore existing solutions, I analyzed popular AR-based apps like Pokémon Go and Pikmin Bloom for their engagement strategies, as well as HYPE for its intimate social interaction model. These case studies helped shape the foundation of my app, focusing on blending gamification with emotional journaling in a way that feels natural and engaging.
2. Ideation & Concept Development
Recognizing the need for a safe, interactive, and community-driven experience, I developed the concept of Emotion’s Quest—a mobile app that combines AR and emotional journaling to encourage students to express, share, and reflect on their emotions in real-world spaces.
From the start, I aimed to create a visual and interactive emotional support system. Rather than relying on traditional mood-tracking apps that only log emotions, I explored how users could actively engage with their feelings and connect with others through shared experiences.
3. UX Research & User Journey Mapping
To refine the user experience, I conducted interviews with students and mental health professionals, gathering insights on how people prefer to express emotions and interact with others in digital spaces. These insights shaped the core interactions and flow of the app, ensuring an intuitive and meaningful experience.
Through user journey mapping, I structured the app around:
- A private journaling space for self-reflection.
- An AR-based interaction system that lets users place emotions within their environment.
- AI-powered personalized quests that connect users with similar emotional states, fostering community and mutual support.
4. Prototyping & Testing
With a clear user flow and feature set, I began developing wireframes and interactive prototypes, experimenting with different UI structures to make the app engaging yet easy to navigate.
A major focus was on micro-interactions—especially on the main landing page, where subtle hover effects and animations encourage users to start journaling immediately. Testing revealed that small UI refinements, such as visualizing emotions in AR instead of lists, improved engagement and emotional connection.
I also tested different ways to match users based on emotions, ensuring that AI-driven suggestions felt organic and useful rather than intrusive. This led to the creation of personalized quests, designed to strengthen connections and encourage users to reflect on their emotions together.
Main & Sub Pages
On the main page, users can start journaling their emotions by clicking on the bear icon. They can choose from detailed, pre-set options or write their own entries for a more personalized experience. Users can also access the explore page, where they can discover popular quests completed by others and track daily or weekly emotional trends within the community.
After journaling their emotions, users can choose to place their emotion in a specific space within their community. They can drop it anywhere and even leave messages on other users' emotion markers. To ensure a safe and supportive environment, the app monitors and restricts harmful language.
Once an emotion is placed, the app finds nearby matches and notifies the user. They can then explore the space, select an emotion marker, and if both users choose each other, they are matched. Matched users receive shared quests designed to foster connection and understanding. After completing the quests, they have the option to communicate and engage further.
5. Refining & Finalizing the Design
After multiple iterations and user feedback, I optimized the design by:
- Enhancing the UI for a seamless AR experience.
- Implementing content moderation tools to ensure safe emotional sharing.
- Fine-tuning AI-driven quests for personalized recommendations.
By integrating research, UX strategy, and creative interaction design, Emotion’s Quest became a unique and immersive tool for students to navigate their emotions in a visually engaging way. Through prototyping and testing, I refined the app into an intuitive, research-backed product that promotes emotional well-being through interaction and design.
