Metamorphosis
3D Book Cover Design
Fall 2020Saint Louis, United States
For
the design concept, I used an “Apple,” a key symbol that reveals the theme
throughout the book. An “Apple” represents the food that Gregor’s family does
not care to feed him. The author puts an emphasis on the disconnection between
Gregor and his family and the loss of love and innocence as the story moves on
by bringing out the symbol, “Apple.”
I chose to use a cursive type in order to have one long apple peel without any disconnection. Since it is impossible to have such a long apple peel, it conveys the feeling of absurdity. Such absurdity is another significant theme that the author depicts. Unlike Gregor feeling comfortable with his changed body as time goes by, his family is oddly calm and unquestioning. They look at the incident as something unusual and disgusting rather than horrified or surprised.
To arouse the viewers’ interest in the book as well as for the better understanding of the use of an apple peel on the book cover, I pulled out the quote that can clearly convey the mood and communicate the connotation of the apple.
For the background, I used the natural color of gray and white that the shadow creates by placing the 3D type on top of the white board. It goes well along with the 3D apple peel type, helping the overall image become more natural and realistic. For the viewers to follow the line of the apple peal nice and smoothly, I tried to reduce the elements that could distract the eyes.
